Packing List for Your Africa Self-Drive

Good preparation gives you peace of mind once you're on the road. A self-drive through Africa takes you across changing landscapes and climates, from warm afternoons to cool mornings and evenings. Packing the right equipment helps you travel comfortably wherever the road leads.

Travel with confidence

Pack the clothing and equipment that make you feel comfortable. Keep in mind that many routes include dusty gravel roads and temperatures can change throughout the day. Dressing in layers is the easiest way to stay comfortable.

A few personal care items are worth bringing wherever your journey takes you.

• Insect repellent containing DEET

Important travel documents

Check well before departure that all documents are valid and complete.

Carrying some emergency cash is also recommended. US dollars are required for visas in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique.

Coffee and food

Most camping equipment does not include a coffee maker. If you enjoy fresh coffee, a stovetop moka pot is a practical addition.

There is generally no need to bring your own food unless you follow a specific diet.

Minor repairs can easily be handled with a few basic supplies.

Both are widely available in local shops if needed.

Sleeping comfortably

Sleeping bags or duvets are included.

During the winter months, an additional down sleeping bag can provide extra warmth during colder nights.

Towels are included with most rental vehicles.

Soft luggage works best

Travel bag or backpack

Space inside a 4x4 is limited. We recommend bringing no more than 15 kg of luggage per person, packed in soft travel bags.

Hard suitcases take up more space and are less practical. A protective cover for your bag is also useful on dusty routes.

Airline baggage regulations

For flights to countries including South Africa, stricter baggage regulations apply. Bags should have at least one flat side and should not have loose straps or protruding parts. Bags that do not meet these requirements may be refused by the airline.

If you're unsure, having your luggage wrapped at the airport is a simple solution.
