eSwatini

The border is behind you. The road climbs into the green Highveld while South Africa slowly disappears from view. Before long, the landscape changes again. eSwatini, formerly Swaziland, lies between South Africa and Mozambique. A small country that keeps changing.

eSwatini is one of Africa’s smallest countries. Yet the scenery changes quickly. The Highveld is cooler and greener. The route drops through the Middleveld towards the warmer Lowveld. In the east, the Lebombo Mountains continue into South Africa and Mozambique. These short distances make eSwatini easy to include in a longer self-drive journey. You can travel from mountain scenery to a wildlife reserve without spending an entire day in the vehicle. The reserves are home to elephants, zebras, leopards, rhinos and hippos. Some are suited to self-drive game viewing. Others give you the chance to leave the 4x4 and continue on foot.
