Cool green highlands surround Antananarivo. The south becomes drier, with spiny vegetation. Tropical rainforest lines the east. Beaches, sandy roads and baobab forests define parts of the west. This variety makes a Madagascar self-drive journey rewarding, but not simple. Good paved roads in the highlands and rough tracks in the south and west. Many routes require a genuine 4x4. Around 90% of Madagascar’s flora and fauna is endemic. Ring-tailed lemurs, chameleons, fossas and indris live in landscapes found nowhere else.
