The San have lived in the Kalahari for generations. Their knowledge, stories and art are closely tied to the land. At the same time, their way of life is under pressure. Preserving culture and building an independent future takes attention, time and local cooperation.

Kalahari Support Group helps make that process visible in the Netherlands and across Europe. It does not speak for the San. It helps local initiatives reach a wider audience and connects people who can contribute.

This is where Kalahari Support Group focuses its work.

Kalahari Support Group supports the development of San communities in the Kalahari region of southern Africa. Where relevant, it also works alongside other local communities.

Awareness and knowledge

The foundation shares information about the Kalahari and its people through documentation, research, educational material and illustrated talks.

Art and local products

KSG helps promote products from the Kalahari and art created by San artists, including work connected to Kuru Art.

Connections that last

The organisation maintains a network of people and organisations involved in the region. This helps knowledge, support and cooperation continue beyond a single project.

A Botswana self drive safari often brings you through Ghanzi, where landscape, art and history meet. We arrange overnight stays here and encourage travellers to learn about the San and the work of Kuru Art and Kuru Development Trust.

We also help bring the artists’ work to a wider audience. It gives a stop in Ghanzi more meaning than a night between two driving days.

In 2018, we organised a visit by Chris Zegers and the BNNVARA 3 op Reis team to the Kuru Art Project. The meeting shows what can happen when you take time to look beyond the road ahead.
