The distance is short, but the drive through Chobe National Park can take several hours. Follow the Chobe River and treat the whole stage as one long game drive.

Antelope are common here, while lion, elephant and buffalo may also appear along the route. You stay at Ihaha Campsite.

After a morning game drive, continue into Moremi Game Reserve and Khwai North Gate Campsite.

The day is centred on game viewing. Lion, hyena, leopard, elephant and several antelope species occur in Moremi. Campsites inside Botswana's parks are unfenced, so wildlife can move through camp by day and night.

After the morning game drive, continue through Moremi Game Reserve to Third Bridge Camp on the edge of the Okavango Delta.

The route itself remains part of the safari. Lion, hyena, leopard, elephant and antelope are all possible sightings. As at Khwai, the camp is unfenced and wildlife can move freely through the area.

After the morning game drive, leave the parks behind for a while and return to the inhabited world.

After four nights in wildlife country, a chalet at Discovery B&B in Maun gives you a quieter pause between two parts of the journey.

There is time in the early morning for an optional scenic flight over the Okavango Delta.

Then turn east towards Gweta. Planet Baobab Campsite, on the edge of the Makgadikgadi salt pans, is your next overnight stop.

Today you drive towards Kubu Island, crossing the Nwetwe salt pan and reaching the island around lunchtime.

Kubu Island is a rocky island dotted with baobabs, surrounded by open salt pans. The campsite is simple and close to the island. Explore on foot and watch the sun drop across the flats.

After Kubu Island, a long driving day takes you towards Central Kalahari Game Reserve. An early start makes sense.

The route first heads south across the pans, then continues on tarmac before turning onto a dusty sand road towards the reserve. Once inside, drive on to Kori Campsite near Deception Valley.

A full day for game drives through the Kalahari. Look for the dark-maned Kalahari lion and, with luck, the brown hyena.

Jackals, bat-eared foxes and honey badgers are also regularly seen. Gemsbok and springbok are well adapted to this dry landscape. Stay at Passarge Valley Campsite.

From Passarge Valley, continue to Motopi in the western part of the reserve.

The drive is another extended game drive rather than a simple transfer. The road and the wildlife shape the day together.
