Sossusvlei, where the first light changes everything.
Sossusvlei lies in the middle of the Namib Desert and is surrounded by large red-orange sand dunes. Early in the morning in particular, the landscape changes quickly. The first sun falls across the sand and keeps bringing out new lines and shadows.
Between the dunes lie several clay pans. Deadvlei stands out through the strong contrast between the white ground, dark dead acacia trees and red dunes behind them.
Anyone who wants to reach Sossusvlei early stays in or around Sesriem. From this small village you drive towards the sand dunes and Deadvlei.

Sossusvlei is about contrast. Red dunes rise from a plain with savannah grass. In Deadvlei the image becomes almost graphic: white clay, dark acacia trees and sand in different shades of red.
From Sesriem you can also visit Sesriem Canyon. This sandstone canyon was carved out by the water of the Tsauchab River. The river is usually dry, which means you can walk through the canyon.
In Sesriem itself you will find a few smaller shops for supplies. Several lodges have restaurants where you can eat.
