Palmwag lies in north-western Namibia, along the eastern edge of Skeleton Coast National Park. Volcanic rock, gravel plains, inselbergs and dry riverbeds shape the landscape.
The Palmwag Concession covers around 5,845 km² and forms an important habitat for desert-adapted wildlife.
The Uniab River runs through the area and draws wildlife into this dry landscape. Desert elephant, black rhino, giraffe, mountain zebra and several predators live in and around Palmwag.
Black rhino do not simply appear on command.
Palmwag is an important area for free-roaming black rhino. Part of north-western Namibia’s population lives within and around the concession.
From Palmwag Lodge, experienced guides lead rhino tracking trips. A vehicle first takes you deeper into the concession before the tracking continues on foot.
The search is what makes the experience different. The landscape is vast and open, but the animals remain part of a wild system where nothing is guaranteed.
