Karatu

Karatu sits between the big names.

Karatu lies in northern Tanzania and forms a logical waypoint between Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro highlands and the Serengeti.

For self-drivers, it is a practical place to restock, check fuel and supplies, and spend a night outside the national parks.

For a moment, the safari becomes a normal travel day.

After a game drive in Tarangire or Lake Manyara, Karatu gives the journey a useful pause. Roads along this part of the Northern Circuit connect the wildlife areas in a logical sequence.

Karatu sits in a greener, cooler highland setting than the drier savannahs further along the route. Farmland, villages and hills shape the surroundings.

The town does not need to become a long stop. Its strength is simply being in the right place before you continue towards Ngorongoro or the Serengeti.
