Grootfontein is mainly used as a stop on the way towards the Caprivi Strip. Its location and facilities make it a useful place to break the journey.

There are several shops where you can stock up on food. You can also refuel and withdraw cash.

Sometimes a stop only needs to do exactly that. Restock, fill the tank and continue when you are ready.

‍Twenty-four kilometres away sits 70 tonnes of rock.

The Hoba meteorite lies 24 kilometres from Grootfontein. It was discovered in 1920 and has an estimated weight of 70 tonnes.

It is the largest meteorite on Earth that is still intact. You can visit the site and see it up close.
