The Valley of Desolation rises above the Karoo.

Camdeboo National Park lies in the Karooand almost completely surrounds Graaff-Reinet.

The park covers 194 km² and is best knownfor the Valley of Desolation, where steep cliffs rise around 120 metres fromthe valley.

From the viewpoints, you look across therock formations and the wide plains of the park. Towards sunset, the lightchanges quickly across the cliffs.

A short trail links several viewpoints.

The Crag Lizard Trail takes around an hourand passes several viewpoints.

It is a compact way to experience the parkon foot without committing to a full day of hiking.

The changing mix of rock, open plains andelevation makes the walk part of the landscape rather than simply a routethrough it.
