Addo Elephant National Park

Between the Zuurberg mountains and Sundays River Valley lies Addo Elephant National Park. Across 120,000 hectares of valley bushveld, more than 450 elephants live alongside Cape buffalo, black rhino and antelope.

Sometimes an elephant sets your route.

You are driving through the bush when a herd of elephants moves onto the road ahead. There is not much to do except give them space. Reverse a little. Keep the engine calm. Watch.

The number of elephants makes Addo a striking stop on a South Africa road trip. But the park is not only about elephants. Cape buffalo, black rhino and several antelope species also live here.

By day, large wildlife. After dark, a different rhythm.

Elephants, buffalo, rhino and antelope move through the park during the day. After dark, another side of the bushveld becomes active.

Jackals and aardvarks are among the animals that appear at night. Same landscape, different rhythm.

A park that began with protection.

Addo Elephant National Park was established in 1931. The reason was stark: the Cape Province had ordered elephants in the area to be killed.

Conservationists opposed the cull. Their resistance led to the formation of the park, where the elephants that remained were protected. Addo has since developed into habitat for a wide range of wildlife in South Africa.
