South Africa
For many travellers to Southern Africa, South Africa is one of the first countries they visit. It is also a good starting point to rent a (4×4) car.
Johannesburg and Cape Town are the most popular starting points, seeing as most intercontinental flights land and depart there.
Highlights South Africa
Self-Drive South Africa. Even though most roads in South Africa are tarmac roads, you can still take beautiful self-drive 4×4 trips with a completely equipped 4×4 camper. Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, for example, is beautiful, or you could discover the |Ai-|Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park (4×4 is essential here). Other National Parks have special 4×4 tracks, and you can drive within the park borders.
Self drive across the border
It is also possible to cross from the Kruger National Park into the Limpopo Trans Frontier National Park and Mozambique.
From South Africa you can also take your 4×4 across the Drakensberg Mountains and via the Sani Pass into Lesotho.
In the North you can drive via Mapungubwe National Park to the Tuli Block in Botswana. For example take a look at our 16 days tour from Johannesburg to Livingstone.
