Inhambane

The coast already begins in town.

Inhambane lies on Mozambique's southern coast and is the capital of the province of the same name. The town has a long trading history and older architecture that is still visible in the centre.

On a self-drive route, Inhambane is a logical stop between coastal places further south and Vilanculos to the north.

The town gives you time to restock and walk through the streets and market before turning back towards the beach.

Tofo and Barra pull the route back to the sea.

Tofo lies around 22 kilometres from Inhambane. Its long bay, dive centres and surf scene make it an easy place to stay for a few days.

Further north is Barra, on a narrow coastal strip with beach, mangroves and calmer water on the lagoon side.

Around this coast you can snorkel, dive, surf and head out by boat. The area is known for large marine life such as whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins and, in season, whales.
