Small on the road. Your bed on the roof. The Compact 4x4, Suzuki Jimny or similar, combines the agility of our compact 4x4 with everything you need for an independent camping journey. Its compact size makes it easy to drive and park. Four-wheel drive and high ground clearance give you more freedom on gravel roads, routes through wildlife parks and less well-maintained roads. One rooftop tent for up to two people sits on the roof. Open it and your sleeping space for the night is ready. A mattress, sleeping bags, pillows and bedding are included, along with the equipment you need to cook and eat on the road. Compact still means compact. Luggage space is more limited than in our larger vehicle categories, so there is no room for an additional ground tent. This category is best suited to one or two travellers who pack light.

Before you set off, you’ll know exactly what’s included with your 4x4 and which costs are not. The exact equipment and rental conditions may vary by supplier, so we’ll go through everything with you beforehand. That way, you know exactly what to expect.

- Local support and 24 hour roadside assistance in case of technical problems during the journey.
- Transfer at the start and end of the car rental between the rental location and the airport or accommodation, up to a maximum of 20 km and during regular opening hours.
- Mandatory standard charges, such as contract fees, administration fees and standard cleaning fees.
- Local taxes
- Standard Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
- For damage covered by the CDW, the excess is a maximum of €3,500 per incident.
- For most vehicles, the excess is lower.
- The exact excess depends on the vehicle ultimately booked and will be stated in the booking documents.
- For damage not covered by the CDW, or if the vehicle is used in breach of the rental terms and conditions, a higher liability may apply.

Drive without worries, even when things go wrong.
The rentalcompany’s standard insurance typically includes an excess and, in many cases,does not cover damage to items such as windshields, tires, and other specific components. Our supplementary insurance can significantly reduce the excess, bringing it down to a very low amount or even zero.
Everything you need to hit the road.
Your 4x4 is ready, the essentials are taken care of, and there’s no need to add a whole range of extras when you arrive. Every Selfdrive4x4 rental vehicle includes the following as standard.
- A 4x4 within your booked Selfdrive4x4 category, suitable for the number of travellers and your chosen configuration. The make, model and exact specifications may vary
- Unlimited mileage
- Two registered drivers
- Local support for technical issues and 24-hour roadside assistance
- Transfers at the start and end of your rental between the vehicle depot and the airport or your accommodation, up to a maximum of 20 km and during regular opening hours
- Mandatory standard charges, such as contract fees, administration fees and standard cleaning fees
- Local taxes
- Standard Cover insurance with an excess of no more than €3,500 per claim. In most cases, the excess is lower. The exact amount depends on the vehicle ultimately booked for you and is stated in your booking documents

The exact camping setup varies by vehicle type and destination. What stays the same: you’ll have everything you need to set up camp along the way and hit the road again the next morning.

Renting a 4x4 is one thing. Knowing where you'll sleep on day 7, which route to take through Etosha National Park, and what to do if something goes wrong is another story.
