About the Tanzania Wildlife and Masai Culture Self Drive

During this 4×4 journey, you will alternate between campsites in the heart of nature and comfortable lodges for added rest and comfort. You will visit, among others, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, and the remote Lake Natron. This trip offers a perfect balance of adventure, wildlife, culture, and relaxation in one of Africa’s most impressive safari regions.

We carefully tailor this journey to the season and the current position of the Great Migration. Depending on the time of year, we adjust the route, length of stay, and accommodations so that you are always in the best wildlife areas. This maximizes your chances of spectacular safari experiences and optimal wildlife sightings.

Route & itinerary

10days
1

Day 1: Arusha

You arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where you are welcomed and transferred to your lodge in Arusha. You’ll be staying at the Mtoni River Lodge or similar on a bed and breakfast basis. Here you can relax after your journey and prepare for your safari adventure.

Accommodation: B&B. Travel distance: 45 km.

2

Day 2: Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, you will be transferred to our rental partner for the handover of your 4×4 rental vehicle. You will receive a comprehensive briefing about the vehicle. You will then drive a short distance, mainly on paved roads, to Tarangire National Park, known for its large herds of elephants and iconic baobab trees.

You will stay overnight in the heart of the park at the Tarangire Public Campsite, where you camp in nature under the African night sky. Park entrance fees can be paid directly at the park gate.

Accommodation: camping. Travel distance: 130 km.

3

Day 3: Karatu / Lake Manyara National Park

Today you will explore Tarangire National Park at your own pace. The park is easy to navigate without a guide, and there is no shortage of wildlife. Once you have seen enough, you will depart towards Karatu via mostly paved roads, where you can do some shopping.

You will stay at the Karatu Tented Lodge, where you can cool off in the swimming pool and enjoy the included dinner and breakfast.

Accommodation: tented lodge (dinner, breakfast & lunchbox). Travel distance: 90 km.

4

Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park / Ngorongoro Crater

You will drive along a short and scenic route to Lake Manyara National Park. This compact park is known for its lush landscape, tree-climbing lions, and large numbers of baboons. In half a day, you can easily explore the most beautiful parts of the park, after which you will have plenty of time to continue to the Ngorongoro area for your overnight stay at Simba Campsite, located near the crater entrance.

Accommodation: camping. Travel distance: 100 km.

5

Day 5: Ndutu (Southern Serengeti)

An early departure towards the Ngorongoro Crater for an impressive descent into this natural amphitheater filled with wildlife. You will have the entire day for a safari in the crater. We have already arranged the permits for you. If you find the cost of this crater visit too high, we offer a beautiful alternative route for today that takes you off the beaten track to your next destination.

During the winter period, you will drive through the highlands to the Ndutu area in the southern Serengeti. This area is known for its large predators and, during the migration season, for the birth of thousands of wildebeest. In summer, Ndutu is skipped and you will travel directly to the Serengeti.

In the summer season, you will stay at Seronera Public Campsite. During the winter period, you will stay in a tented lodge (in the Ndutu area).

Accommodation: camping / tented lodge (depending on the season). Travel distance: 100 km.

6

Day 6: Serengeti National Park

A full day of safari in the Serengeti National Park. You will drive independently across the endless plains, where lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and cheetahs are regularly spotted.

You will stay overnight at campsites or tented lodges in different parts of the park, allowing you to fully experience the variety in landscapes and wildlife. This trip is based on camping in the Serengeti (at the Seronera Public Campsite), but there are also excellent accommodation alternatives such as the Mawe Tented Camp. We tailor this to the season and the current position of the Great Migration, so you can experience it in the best possible way.

Accommodation: camping (also possible, depending on the season: tented lodge).

7

Day 7: Serengeti National Park

Another full day of safari in the Serengeti National Park. You will drive independently across the endless plains, where lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and cheetahs are regularly spotted. You will stay overnight at campsites or tented lodges in different parts of the park, allowing you to fully enjoy the variety of landscapes and wildlife.

This trip is based on camping in the Serengeti at Lobo Public Campsite, but there are also excellent accommodation alternatives such as the Mawe Tented Camp. We tailor this according to the season and the current position of the Great Migration, so you can experience it in the best possible way.

Accommodation: camping (also possible, depending on the season: tented lodge).

8

Day 8: Lake Natron

Today you will drive towards the impressive Lake Natron, located at the foot of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai. Here you will fully experience Maasai culture and can take a guided walk to waterfalls or along the soda lake, home to flamingos.

You will camp (included) or stay in lodges at the Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge (not included in the price), under the watchful presence of the giraffe population living around the resort. Staying with a Maasai tribe is also possible for an unforgettable experience.

Accommodation: camping / lodge (full board). Travel distance: 230 km.

9

Day 9: Arusha

After breakfast and a walk at Lake Natron, you will drive back to Arusha where you will return your 4×4 rental vehicle to our rental partner. You will then be transferred back to the Mtoni River Lodge, where you can enjoy the swimming pool, lush gardens, and delicious food.

Accommodation: B&B. Travel distance: 235 km.

10

Day 10: Return flight

You will stay at the accommodation until your departure, where you can continue to make use of all facilities. You will be transferred to the airport for your return flight. Your 4x4 rental car

The default car is a Toyota Hilux 4×4 double cab 2.4 Diesel for all self drives in Southern Africa. For Eastern Africa, it’s always a Toyota Land Cruiser.

The Toyota Hilux double cab is the most perfect 4×4 rental car for a self-drive safari in Africa.

It has much space and comfort, and has sleeping places in the roof tent. This Toyota Hilux Double Cab 4×4 has a separate boot where you can safely store your travel bags, together with all the camping equipment for your self-drive journey in Southern Africa.

Available for both 2 and 4 people, the Hilux is the best choice. For travels with 5 people (two adults and three children) the Hilux double cab can also be used. For more space we do recommend the Land Cruiser 79 Double Cab.

If you’re with just two people, the back seat is especially useful for photo bags, day packs and supplies.

It is possible to upgrade car at extra costs.

We would recommend Selfdrive4x4.com to our friends

We booked a last minute 17 day self drive trip through Namibia with this company and everything was just perfect. Contact with the company was very pleasant and they kept us posted with updates about the progress of our trip. Gps, maps, book and 12V equipment was sent to our home as soon as our trip was confirmed.

Price wise it was a great deal and everything in Namibia (car and layovers) were to our satisfaction. We would definitely book again with this company and we would recommend it to our friends.
