Lilongwe
Lilongwe is the green and relaxed capital of Malawi and serves as the ideal starting or ending point of your self-drive journey. The city is easy to navigate, safe, and far less hectic than many other African capitals, allowing you to acclimatize in comfort or end your trip in a relaxed atmosphere.
The city consists of two main areas: Old Town and Capital City. In Old Town, you will find local markets, small shops and an authentic atmosphere, while Capital City is more modern, with embassies, shopping centers and good restaurants. Lilongwe is also known for its tree-lined streets and green surroundings, giving it a pleasant and spacious feel.
Just outside the city lies the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, where injured and orphaned animals are rescued and rehabilitated. This nature reserve offers a wonderful first introduction to Malawi’s flora and fauna.
