Lesotho
Also known as the “Tibet of Africa”. The steep mountains and dramatic landscape make Lesotho an impressive destination. In Lesotho, you primarily drive on gravel roads, where a 4×4 car is recommended. It is even required in the spectacular Sani Pass.
In this mountainous kingdom, active people can indulge themselves. Whether you want to hike, mountain bike or ride a pony, it is all possible in Lesotho’s impressive landscape. You can also meet the people of Lesotho, the Basotho. They still live mostly according to their traditional way of life.
A self drive Lesotho is part of a 4×4 trip through South Africa. The car rental will therefore be based somewhere in South Africa, such as Johannesburg.
Lesotho is an independent mountainous country in southern Africa, completely surrounded by South Africa. The country is known as the “Kingdom in Heaven” because it is the only independent nation in the world located entirely above 1,000 meters.
Geography and Climate
Lesotho’s landscape consists primarily of pristine mountain ranges and plateaus, including the Drakensberg Mountains.

The entire area is above 1,000 meters, with mountain peaks reaching well over 3,000 meters.
Climate:
In the weather ranges from warm to hot, with frequent local thunderstorms in January. Generally, October to March (summer) is the most pleasant time to visit, although fog and rain are more common. In winter you might get snow in the mountains!
