Rocherpan Nature Reserve
Rocherpan is a Cape Nature nature reserve. It is located on the coast and is home to many birds and colourful wild flowers. The reserve, which is located 25 km north of Velddrif on the Cape West Coast, consists largely of a pan that is usually dry between March and June. In the wet months when the pan is (partly) full of water, you can see flamingos, for example.
In the green season you also have a good chance of encountering turtles!
Rocherpan was established as a nature reserve in 1966 (930 hectares) and the adjacent part of the Atlantic Ocean was declared a marine reserve (150 hectares) in 1988.
Eco-friendly:
All rainwater is collected within the reserve. This is used for the showers and the water in the kitchens. The toilets are long-drop toilets without water. There are solar panels for the energy supply.
Accommodation:
In the reserve you will find a small number of self-catering chalet accommodations.
Activities:
In the Rocherpan Nature Reserve you can go bird watching from the various “bird hides”. These are all accessible on foot from the camp. You can also take a walk around the pan of approximately 7 kilometers. In addition, it is possible to take a long walk on the beach. There is a good chance that you will see seals or dolphins!
