Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders and an absolute highlight of your self-drive journey through Tanzania. This vast collapsed volcanic caldera forms a natural amphitheater with an exceptionally high concentration of wildlife. Thanks to the open landscape and clearly defined, well-maintained roads, the crater can be explored perfectly well in your own 4×4 vehicle.
Many travelers assume that a driver or guide is required here, but this is not the case. You are fully permitted to descend into the crater and enjoy a self-drive safari independently. The road network is logical and easy to navigate, the terrain is not technically challenging, and the open plains allow you to spot wildlife from a considerable distance. Because wildlife density is so high, you will not miss out by driving without a guide.
Inside the crater you can encounter an impressive variety of animals, including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest and, with some luck, even the rare black rhino. As many animals reside permanently within the crater, wildlife sightings are consistently rewarding. Its compact size allows you to experience an extraordinary amount of wildlife in a single day.
The descent into the crater follows a well-maintained road suitable for 4×4 vehicles. Once on the crater floor, you drive on clear gravel tracks that are safe and manageable. Designated picnic sites allow you to stop and enjoy lunch in the heart of this unique ecosystem.
The Ngorongoro Crater combines perfectly with Lake Manyara and the Serengeti as part of a logical self-drive route through Northern Tanzania. With our preparation, route advice and practical guidance, you can explore this world-famous safari destination independently, safely and with complete freedom.
The permit for the Ngorongoro Crater can be arranged by us in advance.
