Ndutu (Southern Serengeti)
The Ndutu area in the Southern Serengeti is one of the most spectacular regions for a self-drive safari, particularly during the Great Migration. The landscape consists of vast open plains and scattered acacia trees, offering excellent visibility and making it perfectly suited for independent 4×4 exploration. The road network is made up of accessible gravel and sandy tracks that are well manageable for self-drive travelers.
Contrary to common belief, a driver or guide is not required in this area. You are permitted to drive independently throughout Ndutu. Thanks to the open terrain and high wildlife density, animals are often visible from a distance. During the calving season, large herds of wildebeest gather here, attracting predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas. This creates one of the most dynamic wildlife spectacles in Africa.
We include Ndutu in our itineraries primarily from approximately December through March, when the Great Migration typically concentrates in the Southern Serengeti for the calving season. Outside this period, we adjust the route and focus on other regions of the Serengeti where wildlife concentrations are stronger at that time of year. In this way, your safari is always aligned with seasonal wildlife movements.
Ndutu combines seamlessly with the central Serengeti and the Ngorongoro highlands as part of a logical self-drive route through Northern Tanzania. With our seasonal planning and practical route guidance, you can explore this exceptional wildlife region independently, safely and with complete freedom.
